Springfield’s Gilded Age Exhibit

The six grand estates on the northern end of Otsego Lake (Mohican Manor, Cary Mede, Ringwood Manor, Swanswick, Pinehurst, and Hyde Hall) are each represented by a panel containing period photographs of the residents, their majestic homes, and their various activities. The central panel tells the story of Leslie Pell Clarke and the other men who built their summer mansions during the late 19th century. Not to be compared to the “cottages” of Newport, the lifestyles of these families were more casual and geared toward country life and lake activities. Boat houses, coach houses, and stables were all part of the estates.
